As we've already seen, Web Services are merely pieces of functionality
exposed in a universal way. Consider those pieces of functionality as small services
with which consumers interact by sending and receiving messages. By interacting,
or as it is sometimes called, subscribing, to a particular service, a consumer
agrees to follow an interface contract published by the Web Service. The Web Service
agrees to provide some advertised function. We'll get to the contract definition
and how exactly services are advertised or published shortly;
but for now the concept
of writing software as services and implementing or subscribing to those software
services is an important one to bring out.
