Inprise/Borland 宣布开发Linux版的Delphi和BCB,据说也以VCL作为核心,
不知道能不能和Windows版的VCL兼容。

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. -- Sept. 28, 1999 -- Inprise Corporation (Nasdaq: INPR), today announced that it is developing a high performance Linux application development environment that will support C, C++, and Delphi development. The project, code named "Kylix", is set for release next year and will be one of the first high performance Rapid Application Development (RAD) development tools for the Linux platform.

"Inprise is moving forward to deliver application development software for the Linux platform," said Dale Fuller, interim president and CEO of Inprise Corporation. "We believe Project Kylix will define rapid application development for Linux and deliver a fast and powerful path for professional application development on the Linux platform. With the strong heritage of Delphi and C++Builder behind Project Kylix, speed to market for developing applications and porting across Windows and Linux should be significantly increased."

Project Kylix is currently planned to be a Linux component based development environment for two-way visual development of graphical user interface (GUI), Internet, database, and server applications. Plans are for Project Kylix to be powered by a new high-speed native C/C++/Delphi compiler for Linux and will implement a Linux version of the Borland VCL (Visual Component Library) architecture. The Borland VCL for Linux will be designed to radically speed native Linux application development and simplify the porting of Delphi and C++Builder applications between Windows and Linux.

The Project Kylix design was heavily influenced by the results from the Borland Linux Developer Survey, conducted in July 1999, which generated over 24,000 unique survey submissions. The results of the survey indicate that developers are seeking RAD, database enablement, and GUI design - all strong evidence that Linux is ready for mainstream professional application development. The Project Kylix development environment is planned to support major Linux distributions including Red Hat Linux and the forthcoming Corel LINUX.

"We are very excited about Inprise's commitment to the Linux OS, as it will allow us to better serve our customers in the open source software market," said Paul McNamara, General Manager of Enterprise Market Segment, at Red Hat, Inc. "Linux developers will soon have access to Delphi and C++Builder, two leading and established commercial application development tools, for the Linux operating system."

"We are pleased that Inprise has recognized the importance of Linux on the desktop and that Corel LINUX will be one of the first Linux distributions to be supported by the Project Kylix RAD development environment," said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer for Corel Corporation. "This will be a powerful combination that will bring an even greater variety of applications and functionality to the Linux market."

The new Linux development environment is currently anticipated to be available in the year 2000. Additional information about the Linux strategy and Inprise's commitment to Linux will be forthcoming during the next year.

About the Linux Survey
The Borland Linux Developer Survey was conducted from July 9 through July 31, 1999, and was linked to and from Web sites around the world, including Slashdot, Linux Journal, Linux Today, SuSE, and borland.com. This survey was the largest public Borland developer survey known to date - generating over 24,000 unique survey submissions. The survey indicated that the majority of developers participating in the survey are planning application development and client server database development projects on Linux.
